Title: Early Trauma and the Impact on Sleep Development

Abstract

Early experiences of trauma and prolonged stress during the neonatal and early infancy period can have lasting effects on neurodevelopment, sensory regulation, and the establishment of healthy sleep patterns. For infants who experience prematurity, medical complications, substance exposure, and/or disruptions in caregiver interactions are at heightened risk for prolonged difficulties with sleep regulation.  Utilizing a trauma-informed approach to treating sleep disruptions is essential for creating a stable foundation for future developmental skills.

This presentation will explore the relationship between early traumatic stress and sleep related challenges in infants and young children.  Attention will be given to recognizing trauma-related sleep issues and differentiating these patterns from developmentally typical sleep behaviors. This presentation will also address the bidirectional relationship between sleep and overall regulation, particularly related to attachment, self-soothing, and emotional development. By integrating principals of neonatal developmental care, trauma-informed practice, and recommendations from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, participants will leave with a framework for developing individualized, child-centered approaches to support healthier sleep development.
